With iPhone 4 now out on Verizon Wireless there are plenty of new owners of Apple's device that may be looking for some games they want to play. I myself have loaded this bad boy up and currently have 21 games on my phone (granted some of them were off my ipod touch before i got rid of it but still). So with that being said I am going to highlight some of my favorite games that I own to maybe give you an idea of somethings you may wanna play!
Angry Birds (.99 cents)
The obvious choice to go with as far as kicking this article off (plus I am going in alphabetical order >.>). Angry birds follows a silly story about pigs taking these birds eggs and they go after them by flinging themselves at them and destroying buildings in the process. It's all a simple slingshot type game with increasingly difficult levels as you progress. It's one of (if not the most) addictive games on the App store. It's also really cheap and certainly worth the money.
Arcade Bowling (.99 cents)
Essentially this is just Skeeball but it is one of the most addicting games I own. It has two modes arcade and progressive. Arcade is your standard game of Skeeball with 9 balls to get as high a score as possible. Progressive is where you go round by round required to get a set score with bonus shots and multipliers. It may sound simple but for your phone it's perfect and the touch controls respond perfectly. If you want a game that will kill a few minutes here and there as well as keep a local and global high score tracker then look no further then Arcade Bowling.
Bejeweled 2 + Blitz (.99 cents)
So who doesn't love Bejeweled? It's a quick and addictive puzzle game plus with Bejeweled 2 you get mobile access to the Facebook version of the game Bejeweled Blitz. For those of you not playing the FB game you have 1 minute to get your highest score possible and any friends you have playing it are ranked to the right of the screen by those scores. You can get special power ups from coins, as well as explosive gems and other special items to rack up the score. The iPhone game has all this plus the typical modes found in the PC game. Puzzle game lovers should definitely pick this thing up!
Fieldrunners ($2.99)
This is a form of tower defense game but instead of there being a set path for the enemies to walk, you set the path based on where you place your weapons. You will start out with a simple level where the enemies come out from the left and the base is straight ahead to the right, leaving you the whole area to mold a death march for these silly fools trying to get to your base. As you progress it gets harder with enemies coming from multiple areas and you having multiple bases. The game also has maps you can purchase separately with additional weapons.
Fruit Ninja (.99 cents)
Fruit Ninjas! This game is simple yet addicting. You have fruit being thrown at you and you use your finger to swing a sword to cut them down. As you achieve scores you unlock more blades, backgrounds, etc. The game even has an online feature which is quite fun. This is a game that gets passed around at gatherings because people always want to beat the high score. Its certainly worth the low price.
GeoDefense ($1.99)
This is a tower defense game in the more traditional sense with graphics similar to Geometry Wars. It's simple in structure with a set amount of weapons you use to defeat waves of enemies in levels of higher difficulty. The graphics are really cool for it and if you like defense games it's one of the more enjoyable ones.
Gun Bros (FREE)
A shooter game in similar fashion to say a Smash TV. You play a soldier who has to battle wave after wave of enemies with your choice of weapons. Each level earns you money to buy and upgrade weapons. The game also has an A.I. partner that helps you as well as a multiplayer aspect that allows you to download friends' characters into the game to play as your partner and earn EXP. AND IT'S FREE! How are you gonna beat that?
Infinity Blade ($5.99)
This game has been regarded as the best looking (and in some cases best overall) game of 2010. Infinity Blade comes our way from Epic, the people behind Gears of War and Unreal Tournament. The game follows the son of a fallen hero as you battle your way though the castle of the man you plan to extract your revenge on. The game is pretty simple with point and click type controls to navigate through the castle and to enemies. Once you are in a battle you control your characters attacks and ways to defend/dodge/parry your opponents attack. There is an experience system seen in most RPGs to level your character as well as the armor you equip. As you master pieces of armor you gain extra points to put into your stats. The game is short as you are not expected to beat the ruler of this castle on your first try (you starting at lvl 1 and him being lvl 50) but the game is fun enough to play through the necessary times to gain levels, buy equipment, and work your way to killing the final boss.
Mega Jump (FREE)
Mega Jump is another simple game about high scores. This one uses the tilt controls in the iPhone as your character is shot into the air and you must tilt left and right to collect coins and keep him from falling. For each coin he collects he continues to move upward for higher scores. There are also power ups to rocket him higher, pull coins towards him, and slow his falling to try and collect coins you missed. Overall its a very simple but fun game and again ITS FREE!
Pro Zombie Soccer (.99 cents)
Pro zombie soccer is a game where you defend yourself from hordes of zombies using only a soccer ball. Your character is stationary but you use touch controls to aim and shoot the soccer ball at zombies. As you kill zombies you fill a meter that grants you access to super shots that can either slow down zombies, cut through them like butter, or fire a satelite laser down at a group of them. As you progress through the game the waves get harder and require precise aiming to kill some of the tougher zombies. It's really addicting and the story is pretty funny as well.
Rage HD
Rage HD comes to us from id software, makers of Doom. The game is kind of a glorified tech demo showing off the capabilities of the Rage engine via an on rails shooter like Time Crisis. You have 3 different weapons as you try to progress as far as you can into the game killing enemies and hitting bonus targets. It has all the typical things you would see in a rail shooter like various ammo refills you have to shoot, as well as health packs. The game isn't much but it's pretty to look at, a good time waster, and fun.
Robot Unicorn Attack (.99 cents)
Anyone that is a fan of Adult Swim knows of this game. Robot Unicorn Attack has you playing as well... a Robot Unicorn as you jump from platform to platform collecting fairies and smashing these statue... things for a high score. As your score gets higher the game moves faster increasing the difficulty.
Secret of Mana ($8.99)
A port of the Super Nintendo classis, Secret of Mana is just as fun as it was back when I was a kid. The game is an exact emulation with controls done through the touch screen. The left side of the screen has a small analog to move your character and the right side as your attack and menu buttons. The game runs smoothly and if you were a fan of it growing up it's definitely worth getting on the iPhone.
Street Fighter IV (.99 cents ON SALE)
A well done portable rendition of an amazing console fighter. Street Fighter IV plays great on the iPhone despite the lack in horse power. The characters movements remind me of Clayfighter but it's still impressive and the controls work really well. The analog is on the screen to the left while on the right you have your punch, kick, special, and focus buttons. The special is just used for basic moves like Ryu's Hadoken. Specials and Ultras are done either traditionally through button combinations or by touching the ultra/special bar to unleash the attack. There is a form of multiplayer though I have not been able to try it out quite yet.
Please note that all prices listed could change as there is a possibility they are sale prices or could go on sale and be reduced even more. Some of these titles also have a lite (free) version to allow you to try it out before purchasing. I hope this helps out anyone looking to get an iPhone or even an iPod Touch. As these are all really worth your purchase!
