8 Directors In the Running To Replace Darren Aronofsky for The Wolverine

Now that Darren Aronofsky has stepped away from the director's chair for The Wolverine 8 directors are now on FOX's short list of replacements. The company is looking to get this film back on track before other commitments of Jackman's come up putting the film on hold. Here is the list and the films you may be most familiar with.

Jose Padilha: Secrets of the Tribe and the upcoming RoboCop reboot.

Doug Liman: Swingers, The Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Jumper, Fair Game.

Antoine Fuqua: Training Day, Tears of the Sun, King Arthur, Shooter and Brooklyn's Finest.

Mark Romanek: One Hour Photo, Never Let Me Go.

Justin Lin: Annapolis, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious, Fast Five.

Gavin O’Connor: Miracle, Warrior.

James Mangold: Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma, Knight & Day.

Gary Shore: Commercial Director

Each director has great films under their belts, yet also some stinkers. None of them are action directors of films comparable to what Wolverine would be though that doesn't mean none of them are not capable. So are you surprised they are not going after another high profile director to take the project? Does this worry you in anyway? FOX has a sketchy history with the X-Men series but with reviews starting to come in for X-Men First Class giving the film a lot of positive buzz (check out the 9 reviews submitted so far on Rotten Tomatoes) maybe Wolverine isn't totally lost.

Will Hangover Part II Flop?

Uh oh... did one of us shit the bed?

Recently we did a poll on Facebook asking everyone what remaining films of the 2011 summer season are they looking forward to the most. The Hangover Part II led all others including big finales like Deathly Hallows Part 2 and Dark of the Moon. The film debuts tomorrow and reviews are starting to pour in and so far it isn't pretty. On Rotten Tomatoes Hangover Part II has a 32% with 9 positive reviews and 17 negative. Now obviously more will pile in later today as it's a big release but does this worry anyone? Here are a few captions from the "Top Critics" Rotten Tomatoes lists on their page.

Weekend Box Office May 20th - 22nd

HUGE weekend for the box office as the fantasy movie league kicks into high gear with another big release. Pirates have invaded the top 10 and it's time to get to work.

  1. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides: $90.1 Million *OPENING WEEKEND*
  2. Bridesmaids: $21.1 Million, with $59.6 Million Overall
  3. Thor: $15.5 Million, with $145.4 Million Overall
  4. Fast Five: $10.6 Million, with $186.2 Million Overall
  5. Rio: $4.6 Million, with $131.6 Million Overall
  6. Priest: $4.6 Million, with $23.7 Million Overall
  7. Jumping the Broom: $3.7 Million, with $31.3 Million Overall
  8. Something Borrowed: $3.4 Million, with $31.4 Million Overall
  9. Water for Elephants: $2.2 Million, with $52.4 Million Overall
  10. Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family: $1 Million, with $51.8 Million Overall
Johnny Depp dominated the box office as to be expected and Bridesmaids staying in 2nd isn't that surprising to me with the positive word of mouth from opening weekend. It will be interesting to see how Pirates does this weekend with both Hangover Part II and Kung Fu Panda 2 both opening up. It's a tough call to say what will take No.1 though I really think Hangover Part II has a good shot with it hitting big in our summer movie poll and the following the first one has. Now lets get to the rankings!

Green Lantern Trailer Number 3

Now that my grieving is over how about some awesome. Say for sake Green Lantern trailer number 3.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon Hits Early

Paramount has just made an official statement that they will be bumping the release date of Trandformers: Dark of the Moon UP from July 1st to June 29th. That's an extra 2 days it can cash in before Harry Potter hits a few weeks later. Here is the official statement.

"Early response to footage, especially the 3D footage, has been great so we want to get the word out that this film is as good or better than the first and much better than the last,"

Paramount also released 2 clips from the film. Not much in the way of bots but I'm sure we will see them soon enough. Check them out after the jump.

Martin Campbell will not return for Green Lantern 2.

FFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU.

With my high hopes and anticipation for Green Lantern movie this summer and someone who loves the Green Lantern comics. From the July issue of Total Film [via CBM] director Martin Campbell will not be returning for a sequel.

Campbell has been quoted in saying. “This film has become the instruction manual if they do any further ones. It’s what we call pipe laying.”

Martin has a history of doing this with the Bond films having done 'Goldeneye' and then eleven years later doing 'Casino Royale'. Also with 'The Legend of Zorro' and eight years after 'The Mask of Zorro'. So whenever the next Green Lantern movie comes out it will be with a different director. So if you'll excuse me I'm going to go hunt Bret Ratner and make sure it ISN'T HIM.

Expendables 2 Gets a Poster, a Villain, and a Synopsis

A good amount of Expendables 2 details have been coming out over the past few days. While the entire cast from the first has yet to be confirmed as returning (ther then Sly) a synopsis has been released as well as talk of one of the main villains. First the synopsis

The Expendables are back and this time it’s personal! After Tool (Mickey Rourke), the heart and soul of the Expendables, is brutally murdered on a mission, his comrades swear to avenge him. They’re not the only ones who want blood. Tool’s beautiful young and wild daughter Fiona embarks on her own revenge mission, complicating matters when she is captured and ransomed by a ruthless dictator plotting to destroy a resistance movement. Now Barney and the Expendables must risk everything to save her and humanity.

Now in the world of casting rumors have been coming about that one of the main villains have been cast and it's none other the Jean Claude Van Damme. Details of exactly who he will play has not been released but it's likely to be true as he initially turned down a role in the first and after seeing how much of a success it was he approached Stallone about being in a potential sequel.

Weekend Box Office May 13th - May 15th

Alright another week and another set of new releases though nothing was strong enough to take Thor from the top spot at the Box Office. Lets get into it and then breakdown the leaderboards for the Fantasy Movie League!

  1. Thor: $34.5 Million, with $119.3 Million Overall
  2. Bridemaids: $24.4 Million *OPENING WEEKEND*
  3. Fast Five: $19.5 Million, with $168.7 Million Overall
  4. Priest: $14.5 Million *OPENING WEEKEND*
  5. Rio: $8 Million, with $125 Million Overall
  6. Jumping the Broom: $7.3 Million, with $26 Million Overall
  7. Something Borrowed: $7 Million, with $25.6 Million Overall
  8. Water for Elephants: $4.1 Million, with $48.5 Million Overall
  9. Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family: $2.2 Million, with $50.2 Million Overall
  10. Soul Surfer: $1.8 Million, with $39.2 Million overall

Thor took a bit of a dive as expected but still held the #1 spot 10 million ahead of #2. Bridesmaids took the strength of strong word of mouth and reviews to come in with $24.4 Million and was a FREE AGENT in the FML. Meaning people missed out on a film that could end up having a good 40 - 60 million when it's all said and done. Priest seems to be destined for doom as it debuted at 4th and next week could fall even more with another summer Juggernaut up to bat. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will be coming ashore to take the top spot and lay it's claim to top summer film. Now lets get to the standings for the league.

Weekend Box Office May 6th - May 8th

Alright here we are! The summer movie season is here as well as the start of our Fantasy Movie League! This article will now not only have the top 10 but also each team and the total gross for each film. Anyone curious about the rules please see our Fantasy Movie League section, link is on the right hand side of the site.

  1. Thor: $66 Million *OPENING WEEKEND*
  2. Fast Five: $32.5 Million, with $139.8 Million Overall
  3. Jumping the Broom: $13.7 Million *OPENING WEEKEND*
  4. Something Borrowed: $13.2 Million *OPENING WEEKEND*
  5. Rio: $8.2 Million, with $114.9 Million Overall
  6. Water for Elephants: $5.6 Million, with $41.6 Million Overall
  7. Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family: $3.9 Million, with $36.8 Million Overall
  8. Prom: $2.4 Million, with $7.8 Million Overall
  9. Soul Surfer: $2.1 Million, with $36.7 Million Overall
  10. Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs Evil: $1.9 Million, with $6.7 Million Overall
I think the top spot was to be expected but still a nice weekend for Thor and even better is it should have another strong weekend upcoming with the only 2 releases being Priest and Brides Maids. Priest is an action film based on a graphic novel about an order of priests that were once in a war with the vampire race and believed they had wiped them all out. Brides Maids is a comedy from the producers of Superbad and The 40 Year Old Virgin that has been getting solid early reviews.

Fantasy Movie League breakdown after the jump.

Djamgo Unchained

Djamgo Unchained what is it not sure entirely but apparently its writer/director Quentin Tarentino's next project. This is basically his tip of the hat to the old Spaghetti Westerns. The actor who is at the top of his list to play the role of the title character.....Will Smith.

That's right he wants Agent J to play the lead in his movie. You know who else has been linked to this movie. Well the usual suspects in a Tarantino movie i.e. Christoph Waltz who will be playing the role of a Germain Bounty hunter, and Sam Jackson who will be playing the role of the house servant of the main antagonist
Monsieur Calvin Candie who doesn't have an actor yet.

The basis of the movie is Djamgo(Will Smith) who is a freed slave seeks to reunite with his wife and teams up and gets training from the German Bounty to take down the evil plantation owner.

Variety is reporting
somewhat contradictorily report that Smith HAS been informally offered the role and is interested, apparently willing to forgo his usual mammoth fee too. They also say that both Bradd Pitt and Leonardo Dicaprio turned down roles in the movie.

No news on when it will be released or when filming will begin. All that is known is that the last draft was dated April 26 2011.

Weekend Box Office April 29th - May 1st

We are 1 week away from kicking off the Fantasy Movie League and WOO BOY I am sure people wish it started this week with this record breaking box office. Lets get into it.

  1. Fast Five: $83.6 Million *OPENING WEEKEND*
  2. Rio: $14.4 Million, with $103.6 Million Overall
  3. Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family: $10 Million, with $41.1 Million Overall
  4. Water for Elephants: $9.1 Million, with $32.3 Million Overall
  5. Prom: $5 Million *OPENING WEEKEND*
  6. Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs Evil: $4.1 Million *OPENING WEEKEND*
  7. Soul Surfer: $3.3 Million, with $33.8 Million Overall
  8. Insidious: $2.7 Million, with $48.3 Million Overall
  9. Hop: $2.6 Million, with $105.3 Million Overall
  10. Source Code: $2.5 Million, with $48.9 Million Overall

If you're a movie that opened this weekend and you were not named Fast Five... damn I'm sorry. Fast Five CRUSHED the box office this week averaging over 22,000 per it's 3644 theaters. With Prom doing $5 Million, Hoodwinked Too doing $4 Million, and where is Dylan Dog? sitting at 17th with $900K this weekend there is no hope in sight. Expect Fast Five to have another strong weekend this week as it goes toe to toe with the big buzz of Thor. According to Rotten Tomatoes Thor has the stronger critical percentage of 98% vs 79% for Fast Five though that is never really the deciding factor. The only other new opener next week is The Beaver, a drama starring a suicidal Mel Gibson who finds a new will to live in a Beaver puppet... best of luck.

X-Men First Class 2nd Theatrical Trailer

Fox has released the second trailer for X-Men First Class containing a lot of new footage and still looking as strong as it did from it's debut trailer. I am still a bit uneasy about the film but I am hoping when I sit inside the theater to experience this film that it will ease my fears.

Mortal Kombat Legacy gets CAGED.

Episode 3 is up! and it's time for us to take a look at the life of Johnny Cage.
