If you are a fan of anime (or have been at any point in your life) you should know Akira, either from the animated film or the manga. Warner Bros. has the rights for a live action Akira movie, directed by Albert Hughes (produced and co-directed Book of Eli, Dead Presidents, and Menace II Society) the location of the film changes from Neo-Tokyo to Neo-New York.
With that being said the script has been sent out to several actors to fill the roles of Tetsuo and Kaneda.
The current front runners for Tetsuo are Robert Pattinson, Andrew Garfield and James McAvoy.
While the ones currently looking at the role of Kaneda are Garrett Hedlund, Michael Fassbender, Chris Pine, Justin Timberlake and Joaquin Phoenix.
If we talk strictly acting talent I would say James McAvoy is a good leading candidate for Tetsuo though Andrew Garfield is also a strong choice. Which means they will just choose Robert Pattinson instead. As far as Kaneda most of those actors are decent choices though I don't know which one has the right fit. Just please not Joaquin Phoenix, dude bombed his career with his "retirement" and this definitely isn't the project to get him back on track.
I also have no idea if this will even translate well on film. I wasn't particularly impressed with Akira when I saw the film so a live action version does not really excite me. They could certainly prove me wrong and as the film comes together we will provide you the details.
If Robert Pattinson is cast in a leading role for this movie, I'm giving up on humanity.
