World of Starcraft: The Roller Coaster Follow Up

A few days ago we brought you a story of a mod being worked on for Starcraft II that transforms the game into an MMO. Well it looks like the title of the mod has gotten a lot of attention from a lot of people. Initially an outcry was sent through the web over Blizzard asking for the video showing off the progress of the game to be removed from YouTube. The future of the title was left in question with even the creator Ryan Winzell unable to provide answers.

Blizzard as since come forward to provide clarification. Below is a company statement providing clarification.

"It was never our intention to stop development on the mod," Blizzard said in a statement this afternoon. But, "with the name so closely resembling that of World of Warcraft, we wanted to discuss the title of the mod with the developer, and as part of our routine procedure, we contacted YouTube to request the video be removed while that discussion took place.

"We were also curious about the project and wanted to discuss with the developer what the mod entailed."

Winzell later confirmed all this on the message board he started for his mod. Winzell will move forward with the project, but changing it's name to something different that also has Blizzard's approval.

Though it gets better, Winzell has actually been receiving a lot of contact from various small companies since this hit the net. Riot Games has contacted him to come to their headquarters and apply for a job. Blizzard is also inviting him to their headquarters as a showing that their intentions were not to kill his efforts to give the SC community something they have wanted for years.

Just don't read too much into them forcing a name change to the mod. It is common for companies to have legal trademarks for things they currently do not have intentions of making the property a reality. It is simply a matter of protecting the brand. Though it does go to show that every now and then one man's efforts can certainly be rewarded.
