Weekend Box Office January 14th - 17th

The first weekend of 2011 to feature big new releases is over with a new top 10 at the box office. Here they are!

  1. The Green Hornet: $34 Million *OPENING WEEKEND*
  2. The Dilemma: $17.4 Million *OPENING WEEKEND*
  3. True Grit: $11.2 Million with $126.4 Million overall (4 weeks)
  4. The King's Speech: $9.1 Million with $44.6 Million overall (8 weeks)
  5. Black Swan: $8.1 Million with $73 Million overall (7 weeks)
  6. Little Fockers: $7.1 Million with $134.2 Million overall (4 weeks)
  7. Tron Legacy: $5.7 Million with $156.9 Million overall (5 weeks)
  8. Yogi Bear: $5.3 Million with $82.1 Million overall (5 weeks)
  9. The Fighter: $5.1 Million with $65.8 Million overall (6 weeks)
  10. Season of the Witch: $4.5 Million with $18 Million overall (2 weeks)

A lot of Oscar contenders made some leaps or showed great staying power this week to go along with the two big releases. Green Hornet took the Number 1 spot as expected (review will be up soon) but the Dilemma even with being No. 2 doesn't show to have much staying power as it took in as much per theater as The King's Speech this weekend even though The King's Speech was in only HALF as many theaters as The Dilemma. January is usually the time you will see movies like this move up the charts as they are put in more theaters to feed off the Oscar buzz.

Next week only sees one major release in No Strings Attached starring Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman. The previews (especially the red band) shows the supporting cast might actually be able to carry this film to something watchable or semi-entertaining. Plus it has Natalie Portman's ass... how can you go wrong?
