Plus for the few games that came out in April that were a big deal they will more then likely be covered in our next review podcast where we plan to catch up on all the titles we bought that we haven't shared our opinions on yet.
So without further adieu lets get into May.
Motorstorm Apocalypse May 3rd
Yeah I know a day late for this bad boy but regardless of that Motorstorm is Playstation's big 1st party racing title. Motorstorm launched on the system and debuted some impressive capabilities of the PS3 while providing a fun racing experience. The franchise continued offering solid titles both on the console and the handheld PSP. Now Motorstorm is back with it's most destructive title yet. Race anything from sports cars, motorcycles, off road vehicles, to freaking monster trucks. The track breaks down and crumbles around you causing mass destruction and looking gorgeous doing it. The game will offer a story mode as you follow several racers who are racing around the self destructing city before ultimately escaping certain death.
Offering Split Screen multiplayer as well as 16 player online (whenever PSN starts working again). With a destructive environment, tons of vehicles, a deep story and online experience Motorstorm may be the best racing option for PS3 owners not only this month.. but this year.
Brink May 10th
An article like this can't be complete without at LEAST one first person shooter, though before you groan let it be known Brink is not the conventional first person shooter. The closest I can compare the game to is Borderlands. The game will have various job classes spread across two factions in an ongoing war for control. The war is between The Security and The Resistance and takes place on The Ark, a man made island isolated from the rest of the world that has been filled with refugees after the latest global environmental disasters. As I said the game will have 4 classes Operative, Medic, Engineer, and Soldier.
Operatives are like spies, able to hack devices and take the appearance of players on the opposite team to infiltrate their base for hacking objectives. Medics are obviously the healing class, able to heal teammates as well as revive them, their key role is for VIP missions as they are the only ones able to heal or buff the VIP. Engineers are a support class that is used to help push the frontlines as they can build (and repair) turrets and machine gun nests, they are also the only class that can diffuse mines as well as remove hacking devices. Finally soldiers are the muscle, able to use abilities to complete destruction objectives as well as use Molotov Cocktails, they can also resupply ammo to anyone not near a supply room.
The game is objective based with each class having an important role in getting the win for their team, also character customization is big in this title with you gaining levels as well as new attire and customization to make your character your own. You have one character linked to both online and offline so any experience you gain in single player is transferable to the multiplayer. For those of you wanting Borderlands 2, this may be the title to hold you over till that big announcement.
L.A. Noire May 17th
L.A. Noire has a lot of hype behind it, not only because it's a Rockstar game, but also for it's graphical technology as well as genre of gameplay. The game debuted at a film festival and was praised as a game that not only was fun to play, but fun to watch as well. They used extensive face recognition technology to motion capture the dialogue for each character bringing the cut scenes to life, not to mention the voice acting itself is top notch. If you are expecting Grand Theft Auto in the 40's you are mistaken. This is a crime solving title with interrogations, detective work, gun play and more. Think of an interactive version of L.A. Confidential. This game is a huge gamble for Rockstar as it breaks apart from their usual open world titles but with their outstanding reputation I don't feel there is much to worry about.
You assume the role of Cole Phelps an World War II soldier who joins the LAPD and rises through the ranks. It is your job to solve a series of murders going on in Los Angeles as well as righting wrongs Cole feels he committed during the war. There will be a lot of investigating work as well as high speed car chases and plot twists as you work towards the truth with partners you earn along the way as you move up the ranks. L.A. Noire is looking like an early contender for Game of the Year and is exciting a lot of Noire genre fans.
Infamous 2 June 6th
inFAMOUS was a great open world game that as you progressed your powers became more powerful and you got a firm grasp of just how devastating you could be. Couple that with different power trees based on if you were good or evil and the re-playability was large. Different progressions, plenty of site missions, and boss battles similar to that of God of War but with a new take and it was an exciting game to play. The sequel initially caught flack for changing the design of it's main character but has since gone back to the original design and the game looks very promising. Hopefully the title can live up to the original especially with it's new feature of level designing. Now players can create side missions with specific objectives to share online. Choose a setting, fill it with monsters, set the primary objective and then once posted online it will appear on players city maps and they will receive the option to play it for extra experience. It's an interesting new idea that may put this title over the top.
Child of Eden June 14th
Child of Eden appeared in our quarter 1 feature but was delayed and now is set for June. It is truly the first Kinect game that is directed more towards the hardcore, even if it is a niche kind of game. It is created by the team behind Rez and is of similar design using hand motions to lock onto multiple targets and then blow them away in a shoot'em up style of gameplay. The game has a crazy sort of techno design coupled with an electronic soundtrack that will get fans of the Dreamcast cult favorite ramped up. Hopefully this time it meets it's release date.
Duke Nukem Forever June 14th
It's really happening... seriously... it's coming out. Duke Nukem Forever has been the joke of the gaming industry for about 14 years as the game that would never come to be. Near the end of 3D Realms time in the industry they were putting out more and more footage and screens of the game promising it was indeed coming. Some companies were even coming forward and promising them a monetary bonus if they got it done by the end of the year. Then 3D Realms closed and Duke Nukem seemed to be truly dead. Enter Gearbox, makers of Borderlands to scoop up the rights and finish the game to set it up for it's ultimate release. Gearbox had to delay the game a month sending shockwaves of jokes and ridicule due to this game's long development cycle. Everyone that is a fan of Duke Nukem knows what to expect in the title, vulgarity, crude humor, strippers, crazy weapons, huge monsters, a true time warp back to the old days of the FPS. with everything that made Duke Nukem a beloved icon in the 90s is intact and will be hitting shelves in June... maybe...
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D June 19th
WHOA! A handheld game covered in our article. We didn't have any of these in the first quarter worth mentioning and it's kind of ironic the first one we talk about is a remake, but it's Zelda so it needs to be mentioned. A remake of (arguably) the best Legend of Zelda game ever make, Ocarina of Time 3D not only takes the game in the 3rd dimension, but also improves the graphics and adds new features. The HUD system from the first game is now on the touch screen opening up a better view for the gamer on the top screen, also the dungeons added to the Japanese version of Ocarina of Time titles Master Quest are added to the game. It's a new way to experience a classic title on a new piece of hardware (that we have reviewed BTW) and will be the first BIG title for the system.
Dungeon Siege III June 21st
A lot of people are anticipating Diablo III this year (if it actually ships in 2011), though it is not the only dungeon crawler coming out. Those of you looking to get your fix from the genre may want to look into Dungeon Siege III, the 3rd entry in the popular PC franchise. The story mode of this title focuses on 3 unique characters all with their own job classes. You will progress them through the story and strengthen them through their specific skill trees to improve their capabilities. The game will feature co-op allowing people to jump in with any of the 4 playable characters even if you have not met them along your story mode yet. Dungeon Siege has always been known for their mix of modern and medieval as shown with their sniper/witch character. The game has lots of loot to collect and character progression is deep with controls being very solid. This is definitely a title to look forward to in the Action RPG department.
Another version of Street Fighter IV!?! Yes good friends, this final edition of Street Fighter's latest installment comes to us in two ways, downloadable content if you already own Super Street Fighter IV, and disc format if you don't. This time around 4 new characters have been added to the game in the form of Yun, Yang, Evil Ryu and Oni. Not only will the title come with these characters but also a huge amount of character balancing that has taken place in the arcade release. The console version will also have an extensive overhaul of the replay online feature, allowing broader searches as well as availability to see videos from the top players in the world. It is the last release for the Street Fighter IV series and it completes the title with a lot of fine tuning.
Well kids, that's it for now though stay tuned not only for when we cover Quarter 3 but I will also have a collection of videos for these hot titles to feast your eyes on.
